Life, Motherhood

Don’t Forget to Take Care of You, Too!

It’s been over a week since my last post; its been too long, I know. However it has been much needed I was reading a post over on Quirky Workin’ Mom’s about putting yourself in timeout from the world of social media and other toxic areas in your life. Taking a timeout and giving yourself a time to relax, reboot, & get things done! I wanted to just take a few days off to begin with but then another day got added then another, it was quite nice to take that time off!
I was able to have family time with my husband who was off work for the last couple of weeks due to switching to a new job, which he started on Monday. I spent more time with my boys even though they were never in one place for more than a couple of minutes, enjoyed me giving a little extra time to them anyways. And finally I found time for myself! After weeks of rolling through this season of sickness, stress, anxiety, & all the rest of 2020 I needed some sort of me time.
It should have been a no brainer to start taking care of me but when you are a mom who takes care of kids, the house, most of the bills, the car, the cooking, the cleaning, remembering trash day, taking kids to school or doctors appointments (most online), making sure the animals get fed/watered, and so much more it can be so easy to forget to take care of well YOU!
To combat the sort of funk I have fallen into I have started a new diet that really is more of a healthier eating style controlling portion sizes and replacing a lot of unhealthy choices with better ones. When the days are nicer I opt to walk to the bus stop to pick up my oldest rather than take the car & even get in some extra walking before sometimes if its a really nice day. I usually will have my almost 9 month old with me so weather needs to be baby friendly to go for a walk outside. If a walk outside isn’t possible that day I will do my best to get inside chores done; cleaning the house mostly. Getting up and moving around helps out a lot with moods and how you are feeling.
I think that a lot of people have been in a funk lately with COVID and just 2020 in general. Giving myself time to get more things done and also take a break has been a nice change to my normal day of chaos. I will admit I have been so used to not posting it would have been easier to continue that but I enjoy writing too much to give it up so soon! I will also admit I have been battling against the faceless enemy of anxiety & depression that come to visit me from time to time. Taking time for myself has also been a great way to help with those feelings as well.
I guess the moral of the story I am writing to you about is that every person at some point needs to give themselves time that is reserved just for them and them ONLY! If you are always taking time for everyone else in your life giving your self and time to person after person you are going to get worn out physically & mentally. You need to STOP and smell the roses or rather take that deep breath and evaluate what it is that you need instead of what everyone else is needing. You may not be able to take a whole lot of time but a little bit of time for yourself goes a long way! It gives you a chance to relax and unwind. You just need to figure out what YOU time looks like for you & your needs!
There’s still going to be time for all of the others in your life who need you but only if you give yourself a break once in a while! Don’t be afraid to pamper yourself a little more and find that special time for you and YOU only!

Lilly and Fin: A Mermaid’s Tale

Since joining Bookroo my family and I have received some really awesome books; I opted for the chapter books that way I can read to them for a fun story time. I always remember having books read to me as a child and wanted to be able to pass that on to my children. Also chapter books are something that they can read when they are old enough to read themselves and still be able to enjoy them even years from now. One of the books we have gotten in one of our boxes is a chapter book by Cornelia Funke called “Lilly and Fin: A Mermaid’s Tale”. We began reading this book for our homeschooling about a month or so ago; I believe sometime in September while simultaneously reading a couple of others that I plan to write about here in the future. Some where in September the idea of attempting to keep my four year old focused on schooling was just a pipe-dream and eventually let that go. I could tell he was just not ready for school at home and since his brother had gone back to public school the month prior I guess I just didn’t feel the need to push him. I mean he is 4 years old and a bit of a zig zagging all over the place kind of kid who has the attention span of a fly if you know what I mean. While schooling was over and all that didn’t mean that we couldn’t still read as that is something that we loved to do just because.
We finally finished our little book last week; it took longer than it actually takes to read the book because of life and only reading here and there but we did it! If you know anything about me as a parent you would know that I am really feeling great about getting yet another book under the old belt because I haven’t been much of a reader in a very long time. In a time when you spend quite a lot of time at home you more than likely like myself would pick up some new skills or hobbies to help pass the time. I have even started to read another chapter book that we received in a box myself or really whenever anyone will listen to me read it as my kids weren’t interested in a chapter book without pictures in it just yet. No worries I am quite enjoying the said book and when I finish it I will write about it as well.
To the book at hand “Lilly and Fin: A Mermaid’s Tale” it is a chapter book intended for ages 7-10 yrs & a reading level of 2-5. I don’t feel that just because a book is intended for a certain age group that it means it should be read by just that age group well depending on what that book is about would be the only reason I can think of to why a kid couldn’t read a book intended for a more mature audience. Otherwise I don’t see a problem! The book is a chapter book but it is a good read for kids or directed towards kids because it has a good amount of color filled illustrations intertwined throughout its pages. Within those pages are some fun activities that I will fill you in on here soon. Each chapter in this book doesn’t take too long to read and there are roughly 3-6 pages in each for reading amongst the other pages that are illustrated.

The book brings an interesting twist to how humans may be perceived by the underwater world. I think that this perspective is fun to see unfold especially from an entirely different world. Join two merpups (kid mermaid’s) on an adventure in their underwater world where they come to find that maybe their parents might actually know what they are talking about. They learn a lesson and meet some new and interesting figures; some friend & some foe. As you read you are taken on the journey that they will never forget and that will have forever changed their little lives.
Since both of my boys are still not readers for themselves and well my 6 year old is just now beginning to read but not ready for this level of book on his own I am the one who did the reading for this book. As I read through I learned a couple of things; one this was a great book for someone who was older than 4 which is expected. The second being that it was a little bit hard to get into the story line as an adult I should have been able to theoretically jump right in but for the first couple of chapters it was a bit hard to follow, but I was determined to finish it with or with out my listeners. I finished it with my 6 year old who soon decided he enjoyed it about half way through when it started to get a bit more interesting for him. More action & mystery I presume. My 4 year old wasn’t super into this one and that is okay as it wasn’t really for a 4 year old but still suitable for him to listen too if that makes sense. The first half of this book is all about giving a background about the characters both underwater and on land which is expected however the way that the book just jumps into the story makes it a little hard to get into it at first. Like I mentioned the real interesting parts weren’t until after a couple chapter’s or so. To help liven it up a bit I started making different voices to go along with each character because it was hard to get into the mind and that did seem to help the younger listening group.
I really wanted to love this book and it is great but about half way through in my opinion; I don’t love it but I like it. It has a good lesson for kids who don’t want to listen to parents or the rules teaching them that there are consequences for disobeying. Doing some things that you are told not to do can lead to danger and that there are reasons for rules. I would read it again so I did enjoy reading it, just not an easy one to get into. During the introduction of the characters I did enjoy seeing the different perspectives of the different characters for instance the Mermaid people see the humans so differently from the way most humans see the ocean and its creatures in it. Makes you think about things a bit more which is a good lesson to include in a book like this directed toward kids who are still learning.
Something I discovered while I was researching the author of this book Cornelia Funke is that the book was originally written in German and that this version I read was a translation from the original book; this may have a big part in why the book was a little awkward in the beginning. It could explain why it may have been hard to connect to the book. I assume it was translated correctly otherwise I probably would see more complaints on other reviews over the book when I researched it and the author. It is just that sometimes different language barriers can translate differently but correctly. I don’t have any idea if this is the reason why it was a little awkward it is just my opinion and would explain it a bit.

Earlier I mentioned some fun activities that this book has hidden in its pages; what did I mean is what you are probably wondering!? So at the very end of the book there is a section dedicated to activities that the author snuck into the book to make reading so much more fun for the kids. It includes a board game printed on one of the illustrations you see above. You add your own game pieces and use your own dice but the rest on how to play is located in the book ideally after you have read through it but I suppose you could just skip ahead. Also there are fun hidden objects through out the illustrations that makes a sort of I Spy game that could be played alone or with other readers just as well. This would be especially great on a long car ride or similar situation. I thought that these were a great way to interact with the reader/readers of this book which allowed to bring it more to life than just reading the words on its pages. I figured I would give you a sneak peek in the picture above but if you want to know how to play and what fun hidden objects to find in the books illustrated pages then you will just have to purchase it or check it out at your local Library.

That brings me to the next topic how much does this book cost new? As I mentioned above I mean way up there; my family received this book in our monthly Bookroo box where the books in the box is to be worth more or pretty much the same amount of the monthly box price by pretty much the books we have received have all been well worth it and always come to a total well above the monthly box cost which makes it so awesome! This book costs $9.99 US / $13.99 CAN brand new. I found it on Amazon for $9.59 brand new US hardcover or $9.99 US Kindle. The book we have is a hardcovered book. I supposed you could try to find it used for cheaper if you looked on the right site such as eBay or Facebook Swap. I think that if you have a kid who is into the creatures of the sea or maybe even just you and love reading fun adventurous stories/books this book would be worth at least checking out. Perhaps at your local library if you aren’t yet committed to buying it for yourself.

In a conclusion for my thoughts on this book I would have to say that I do think it is a good book to read and it does have some good lessons in it for young readers. I love that it takes you into a whole different world that kind of connects the world that us humans know but also gives a new perception of what the underwater world of the oceans may be like like if you ever think about what the sea creatures really think about us humans sort of imagination perspective! It is worth checking out; maybe you will find a fun new story that is a hit as a new family favorite!

Amazing books kids love!

Give the Gift that Gives Back: Bookroo

I am always looking for the perfect gift for the holidays for my kids and I know a lot of other people go through this same crisis. In our family we don’t have a whole lot of money to throw away on some random toy that is going to be loved for a minute then tossed a side the next. When looking for a gift for any occasion I always tend to look for gifts that the person I am gifting to (usually my kids) will get something in return whether that be a new skill or something else they learn from that gift; something learned or rather something useful is the key! What better way to give the gift of knowledge than to actually give knowledge in the form of a book or books. Books for kids don’t need to be filled with history lessons or math problems for them to learn something from them. A book can be filled with stories that bring their imaginations to life and that is a great gift to give. It allows kids to be kids by giving the ability to get their brains working and thinking but in a way that lets their imaginations run wild. They can read it themselves or be read to and no matter how a book is read it opens up so much more for a kid than any old toy would do. My 6 year old is just learning how to read; he loves books and enjoys trying to read all sorts of new words that he finds in his books. He will even read to his younger brother’s who will eventually start reading on their own someday. Books are a great way to teach in a fun way for kids and adults too as I have come to love reading chapter books to my kids. It brings out their imaginations and dusts mine off letting me remember that fun feeling of all of the characters in a story that seemed to disappear as I grew into adulthood.

I would like to introduce you to a great company Bookroo; they are a monthly book box service that sends books in the mail every month. They offer three kinds of books to be mailed depending on which is chosen for your subscription is the one you receive. They have a variety of monthly plans available as far as pricing is concerned. I have recently written some posts explaining the entire how to sign up for Bookroo at the links below. I encourage you to check them out if you are ready to give a great gift to your kids every month. Some great highlights about this company with out going into all of the details which will be linked below are: 1) that they wrap each individual book up in wrapping paper for your kids to unwrap when they are received they are always fun and different wrapping papers which make it all the more fun. I mean who doesn’t enjoy getting gifts to unwrap!? My kids love it and it makes the books we get all the more personal and special. 2) The books are well worth the price you are paying monthly. They don’t just put some cheap book in the box and call it good, NO , these books that are hand chosen by the way are carefully picked out. They do their research to find the best books to include in their boxes. They more than make up for the per box price which is different depending on the plan selection you choose. The per month box starts at $24.95 + Tax (for me tax is $4.99) which makes my moth to month box for the two chapter book selection I chose for my kids $29.94. However the price goes down if you choose to do the 3,6,or 12 box prepay. Check it all out here on my previous post all about Bookroo HERE!
If you would rather just go straight to the source check out their site here at BOOKROO.

3 Reasons To Buy Second Hand

Photo by Min An on Pexels.com

Having a family no matter how big or how small means everyone needs a lot of things and those things can be expensive! Kids are always growing they go through sizes before you can blink. Buying clothes just to have to buy new ones not far from that shopping trip because kids are growing all the time just isn’t a smart use of the hard earned money that your family is making. For my family it just doesn’t make sense to throw let’s say $20 for a single outfit just the shirt and pants give or take a few dollars just for those two items; and that is using the logic that I have underwear or socks on hand that fit which ever boy the outfit is for. At Walmart depending on the sales going on I could maybe get two outfits out of a $20 per boy if the clearance deals are in my favor. Meanwhile at a second hand store such as Good Will or other thrift stores in my area I can get shirts of all kinds of brands anywhere from $1 each-$4 each sometimes more depending on what kind of shirt it is. In that case I wouldn’t purchase those. For pants depending on what they are (jeans, sweats, dress, or sporty) those range from $2-$5+ each when comparing between Walmart brand prices only or even Dollar General brand prices to thrift store prices the winner is very clear!

Often times some people put shame on shopping at second hand or even using hand me down clothing because it’s not new and I am tired of that! Who care if it’s not the newest or latest trend in clothing; it’s clothes that do the main job clothing is for and that is to keep you warm and covered. I have found many name brand clothes shopping second hand and they are always cheaper than buying them brand new which is the smarter way to shop in my opinion! If you are able to where name brand clothes for a fraction of the original price wouldn’t you? My answer would be yes; although I don’t usually fixate on those stigmas such as brands because if it fits it works no matter who makes it! If your on the fence on shopping second hand for whatever reason I would like you to keep an open mind at least until you check out my 3 reasons that I feel make shopping second hand definitely worth it!

#1

Price of anything and everything is always on my mind when I go shopping no matter what it is that I am purchasing. If something is too expensive then that will change the ability to buy something else on my shopping list. Where ever I can cut the price in half or further is how I am able to buy things like groceries for my family or have those fun special pizza nights that happen once in a while because I am very price conscious in my spending. One place we cut prices is when we shop for clothing, specifically kids clothing! Buying second hand just makes the most sense when shopping for clothing especially kids clothing because of the fact that they are still growing and purchasing new is a rare thing that is usually only spent on underwear & socks but everything else has been used by someone else at some point in its little clothing life span. If I could find items like socks & undies used I would get those too but I haven’t had a real strike of luck in finding those items in the past so it is what it is. With those items; they are usually only purchased at special times for gifts or once in a growth spurt for the oldest because the rest get the handed down ones of course! Like I mentioned above buying second hand gives a huge amount of clothing in price when they are purchased used versus in the store brand new. We are able to get more outfits out of a $20 bill than buying brand new in store. Saving money on clothing helps bring in more of other house hold necessities such as food, toiletries, school supplies, or even medicines. Keep in mind the amount of money you could have for other important items that can’t be bought second hand if you were to use less money on clothing that can be purchased used or second hand the next time you are low on funds! Note: You can buy second hand clothes for the whole family not just for the kids!

#2

Quality, of clothing can often be based on how much you are willing to spend on clothing you want to get. Usually buying cheaper priced clothing at stores that sell cheaply made clothes are clothing that will not hold up for very long and tend to fall apart easier because of how they are made. However being able to purchase clothing second hand gives me an upper hand for my families clothing needs. Reasons being that I am getting better quality clothing that would normally cost a fortune for our family new and getting those better quality of clothes at a cheaper price instead. Keeping the quality of clothes that will hold up a lot longer than others! I love being able to get great quality clothing at an affordable price.

#3

Quantity; getting the most bang for your buck is what a majority of the world is facing especially now during 2020. When making purchasing decisions for our family for clothing I as a mom am always trying to get the most per dollar that is allowed. Buying clothing from second hand clothing for our family is a great way to get more clothing for the money we are spending for that category. Second hand clothing is always a whole lot cheaper than buying brand new most of the time unless you are hitting a really great clearance deal in the store which does happen from time to time but not enough for it to even out the price by relying on just clearance deals. Most of the time you get $1-$4 for clothing at second hand stores or sometimes higher depending on what you are looking for; in those cases where a item of clothing may be higher than the $1-$4 range would be for a really dressy article of clothing but still when compared to buy that same thing brand new you are getting a real deal due to it being way cheaper used. A good way to make sure you are getting the best deal is to look it up on your google search just to make sure if you are having doubts on whether you are getting a fair deal. This is a great way to make sure that you are spending the right amount of money for that item of clothing especially on a budget that needs more clothing purchased for the amount you are allowed to spend on clothes in general. Usually for our family this isn’t a big deal if something is too much I will look for something else at that used clothing store or go to a different store to keep looking for the right deal that fits our needs. Sometimes if I cannot find the right thing in store I turn to online stores like eBay or Facebook swap groups to see if I can find the right item for us.

Purchasing second hand is how I do most of our clothing shopping and we as a family end up spending less money on clothing that in turn between three boys will be passed on from each boy getting great use out of it before it goes on to someone new depending on how well loved each item of clothing is in the end of our ability to use it. For my husband and I we rarely have to buy clothing because as adults we aren’t growing too much anymore so that helps with the hard earned money we are earning as well, but when we do need clothes or even shoes the first places we look for them is second hand shops as a lot of times they have exactly what we need and when they don’t to the nearest clearance rack it is! Second hand shopping isn’t just for clothing; did you know that you can buy all sorts of household items & furniture used just as well as clothing? I encourage you to explore the world of purchasing second hand/used clothing & other items that you may need for your house/family. You will save money and more than likely will get an even better deal than you would have gotten brand new! These 3 reasons are why I feel that buy used or second hand clothing/items is well worth it versus buying it all brand new. And I think that if you are on the fence about it all that you should at least give it a try as clothing and shoes can be washed/sanitized; furniture can be cleaned; used kitchen items or other household items can be washed/sanitized just as well. There is really no reason to be wasting your hard earned money on brand new items all the time when you can get it used in just as good of shape or even better!

Thanks for reading! Don’t forget to drop a like and follow my blog to keep up to date on future posts! I am trying to get posts out just hit a bit of a slump with all of the sickness, family holidays, & other busy life things happening; but I am writing as much as I can when I have the time so stay tuned!

Anxiety Has Many Faces

Anxiety is nothing new by far. It just lingers around waiting for its moment to shine. It hangs over my head for its chance to jump in and take hold of my life. It has many faces, none of which are the same as the other. Ironically it wears different masks hiding its true identity. Lately I like many others have experienced anxiety. Where does anxiety lurk and hide? Well it is practically invisible and attacks when least expected. For me my anxiety it sneaks up when I am trying to get to sleep and feel nothing but worry about my infant child at night especially or worry about things that are not likely to happen but what if always hangs stalling. I used to be able to just go to sleep so easily and never really had this much of an issue with insomnia until now. My anxiety is an old friend who I thought I had left behind in this race of life of what ending is unknown.

Anxiety is not discriminatory it doesn’t care who you are or where you come from it happens to everyone even if you don’t meet face to face. Anxiety has many friends that often tag along to join in on the fun that it has with all of the emotions that a person gives out into the world. Some days I feel like I am on display for all of these different types of anxiety to pick on and have at. A free for all and it tries on all of its different masks on me. Trying to find the best fit. I feel helpless and stuck.

Who are anxiety’s friends, have I met them?

I am no stranger to those groupies who follow anxiety wherever it may go. They revel in the spot light and will make sure to fill in the gaps of a person’s emotions to better fit there agendas. Anxiety often travels with depression, stress, suicidal thoughts, the feelings of feeling less than, worry, panic, anger, and sadness. Most of which I have experienced first hand and don’t wish those feeling upon anyone. If you do find yourself masked with anxiety or one of its many other masks know that you are not alone. Alone is what they intend to make you feel like they want to self isolate you so that you feel like nothing can make things better and that you will just be stuck forever. When a person is alone it makes the process of cutting that person down and making them feel less than until they actually believe it in their own minds a reality. Anxiety and it’s other masked friends brainwash you they set in worry little by little creating a fear that paralyzes a person it beats that person down to a new level where they feel a variety of feelings all meant to cause a person to feel like they are not themselves and are losing their minds little by little until they do.

What does anxiety look like?

Anxiety and it’s cloaked friends live in the shadows of our minds and only come out to play with our emotions when they see fit. We all have a different way to show that we are going through anxiety or it’s other cloaked friends the infection isn’t always going to look the same for all the different types of people in the world. My anxiety, depression, worry, fear, less than feelings, & stress are different than yours. My anxiety makes it hard for me to sleep but other times I may have a hard time enjoying the stuff I want to enjoy like time for myself. Depression for me is silent usually I don’t cause a ruckus and there is no kicking and screaming it just eats away at me in silent lunges. I get beaten down in my mind and as the sadness takes over the tears pool into a puddle inside and out I feel worthless but no one would know it as I always put on that smile. A half cranked smile forced and at the ready to put on a show for the world because they don’t need to feel what I feel. I am too stubborn I don’t need any help out of this place I’m trapped in it’s not so bad once you get used to it. My feelings aren’t worth being cared about by anyone else but me they are after all my burdens to bare. They weigh me down and as I feel chained down to the ground hunching me over breaking my strength little by little I somehow must still stand tall as if nothing has changed because my pain is invisible. To the outside world it doesn’t exist. To me it exists they all exist they all wear their different masks. Stress lately has had me stretched out to the limit I can feel it’s toll that it has taken on my body. Reminds me of the medieval times the torture devices that stretch the body to its literal breaking point is how I feel sometimes with my stress. The feeling of less than will set in next as if the anxious worry and fear wasn’t enough nor was the depression induced sadness. Then put some stress on the woman… surely that’s enough right? Wrong because anxiety has many faces and so does the rest!

How can you make it better? Is it even possible to feel normal again?

Even though most days feel never ending and that the mask i am wearing the mask that has auctioned itself to me is never coming off it somehow does. Anxiety and all that follows it have that end goal of isolation to make their victims feel alone; I aim to make sure I am not alone even if most of the time I am not physically alone. I have to make sure that I talk to someone anyone who will listen. Talking helps so much more than your mind will let you think that it does. You have to push yourself to escape that box you are in even if it doesn’t seem possible. All that the cloaked box holds is sadness and loneliness. It is a lie. If you let it control you with out fighting you might end up in a real life or death type of situation that can be fatal for you or even others who try to intervene at that point. I’m not saying it is easy because it is far from easy you are literally fighting yourself. Your mind, to be more specific . You are fighting a brain that thinks and plots and twists everything in order to win then on top of that you are attempting to win using can you take a guess what you are using? Your brain! The same one you are fighting against to win what seems to be an unbeatable enemy. It’s okay to ask for help because it is hard but doable. Ask for help, talk to someone! People may not talk to you because they cannot see what is happening to you the feeling you are feeling is invisible on the outside sometimes. When I feel like I am sliding down into a place where I don’t think it is possible to get back out of I know I need to talk to someone I need to get it all out and expel those emotions. I have gotten down to my breaking point to the actual point where I break, what happened? I sank and just kept sinking down further from the surface and that’s exactly what it felt like. It felt like drowning in my mind; eating wasn’t important at that point, talking wasn’t necessary, doing anything was pointless, because why was it worth it. How did I escape my waterless prison in the depths of my mind? I made a choice that I could either die at some point what would have been a horrible way to go, I could be sent to some sort of mental institution and live what was left of my life I gave up on, or I could fight back little by little and piece myself back together. I chose to try again because I believed that there was more to my life that I needed to experience still. Now I’m here sharing it with you. I make it a point not to get to that point ever again; I push myself and reach out to someone anyone who will listen.

Don’t let those masks those cloaked downers get ahold of you forever. They will come and eventually go if you continue to fight back!

Talk About It Tuesday: Are You Prepared For Winter?

Photo by Simon Matzinger on Pexels.com

Winter is coming! No really, in my little Iowa town we received our first snow of the season Sunday night early Monday morning. It’s time to have put all of your summer gear to rest for the season if you haven’t already done so. If you live in the Midwest winter is on its way if it hasn’t already started in your area like it has in mine. Some key things you need to do here in Iowa to prepare for winter are your basic winter preps like: putting the hose away; storing the lawn mower/winterizing it or any other summer time equipment you use; picking up the yard to make sure there are no toys sitting out in the yard to get buried under a blanket of icy snow; get your snow shovels/snow removal tools at the ready making sure they are in working condition; bring out the winter coats & snow gear; get your vehicles ready for winter; & lastly make sure you have your sidewalk salt or whatever you use ready to go! I am sure there is a lot more I am skipping over but those are the top ones on my mind at the moment.

Seeing to how this year has not been kind nor gentle on anyone person in the entire world somehow I don’t feel like this will be a gentle winter like last years was here in Iowa. Winter has opened the door and is still coming; it has only just begun and I fear it will not get much better. Last winter in my area compared to the year prior was a very light winter the winter before left quite a lot of areas around mine devastated when spring came as the thaw was just horrible and flooded a huge majority of the Midwest ruining crops, land, & livestock not to mention peoples lives in general. Then when you’d think it couldn’t get worse it did because 2020 came out of no where in the crap department. Last year was a party compared to how this one is currently going and may continue to go if this winter is heavy, cold, & frigid.

In my mind there’s not a lot that can be done besides preparing the best that we can for what may be headed this way ahead. I will ask the question again; Are you prepared for winter?

If you are great; but if your not no problem I figured I could at least run through some of the above winterizing in detail and perhaps a few more things that could/should be done just in case during the winter months.

5 Ways to Prepare For Winter

#1 Prepare Your Yard/Outside Area

Let’s start from the outside looking inside with your yard/property. For my house which may or may not be similar to yours but will talk about some main things to think about when preparing for winter out there. By now your gardens should have been tucked in for the winter or at least everything that would have needed to have been planted before it snowed should have been done quite a while ago. Now is not the ideal time to plant anything out doors at least where I live; if it happens to still be planting time for fall & winter lasting plants like some garlic varieties you should get right on that because time is almost up if you are in a wintery area that often see’s a cold snow or worse. On the topic of gardening; any tools that you had used for gardening or raking leaves may not do you any good buried under a blanket of snow at least it doesn’t do me any good. It is best to put them all away for the winter out of the way until springs arrives. Instead of gardening tools, rakes, or shovels used for moving dirt around you will need a snow shovel and other winter equipment so best to make the swap for those tools most used in the winter months now rather than later! Most people don’t mow the snow instead use a snow blower to push snow away from driveways and sidewalks. It is time to tuck the mower in for the winter perhaps in a nice warm garage or shed; if for some reason you are like me and do not have either I encourage you to improvise a little bit. I usually wrap a big tarp around my mower to keep the weather off of it. You can even add in a bungie cable to make for a better wrap that stays in place. I then will find a spot close to the house that can be both out of the way and under the porch area for security. If you own a pool or other things with water in them like hot tubs or small garden water features you should drain the water out of those to prepare them for freezing temperatures. Hoses should be disconnected from spigots, wound up to put into storage after draining, & spray nozzles should be put away as well. If you have lawn furniture/outdoor furniture or even outdoor toys make sure you get the furniture put away if possible or covered up to protect them. Toys & bikes should be put away as well or even covered with tarps to keep them in good shape as snow may cause them to rust or fall apart due to moisture. If you are a griller it would be best to have a safe place for grilling closer to the house if you plan on grilling during the winter or just in a good level place where the elements won’t be a problem for you or your house while cooking this winter. Once the yard is in tip top shape I would evaluate it one more time just to make sure you don’t need to do something else to prepare for the winter months; then finally don’t forget to stock up on some outdoor ice melt/salt for keeping walk ways safe.

#2 Prepare Your House

Photo by Ksenia Chernaya on Pexels.com

The outside yard should all be in order but what about the inside? If there is any kind of doubt in your head that something inside your house is not working correctly or even working the best that it can work you might want to consider having it checked out especially before those winter months come knocking on your door! Last year our heater stopped working mid winter and luckily for us it was something that was fixable then not to mention cheap otherwise things could have turned out a lot worse than they did. It was our first winter in our new house that we had just bought in April and buying a brand new heating system for our house was not on the list. It happens though and that is why it is important to keep things up meaning making sure regular maintenance is done on those items. When things like your air filter needs changed change it when something stops working get it checked right away by someone who knows what they are doing rather than taking a guess or trying to do things on the cheap. You might end up paying big money later on by not taking care of them the right way the first time around. If you have an entirely different heater rather than one that runs on electricity/gas you will need to run through your own checklist to make sure all things are running correctly and it has been cleaned up. Wood burning heaters need to be cleaned because of ash build up in the chimney or in the furnace itself. On top of checking up on your heat source for your home to make sure everything is in order no matter what kind of heater you are dealing with it is also a good idea to check windows and doors to make sure that there are no drafts coming in through cracks to keep the heat in and the cold out. If you run into a problem you can always find a solution with the help of the internet that may lead you to fix it your self if it is simple enough or get help from a professional.

#3 Prepare Your Pantry

A well stocked pantry is a necessity all the time not just in the winter time however with the possibility of being snowed inside in my area of good ole Iowa I tend to make sure it is well stocked for sure during colder months. I would also like to add that since it is the year 2020 I wouldn’t want to take a chance on another unprepared catastrophe as we all learned that lesson months ago. I have been in the process of expanding my pantry for my family because of recent events little by little. A good stocked pantry should give you enough food to last your family of whatever number for at least 3 months or longer depending on the level of readiness you have prepared for. You should start to aim for 3 months at first then head for that 6 month goal and so on. My families pantry is mainly a rotating pantry but I am also storing food for the long term use as well. While most items I am stocking up on are food & drinks I am also pushing to stock up on other household essentials such as toiletries, soaps, & medical items. A good food to think about stocking up on is canned food as they have a longer shelf life than other boxed foods or maybe even can your own foods that is if you can find canning equipment as they are harder to find this year more than ever. I will link my past posts that touch up on stocking up a pantry that I have written on my blog with in the past months. Look for those links below this paragraph shortly. Having a well stocked food pantry for your family is important no matter the season but especially winter time and especially now! Long Term Storage: Food and Everything Else. Get Prepared!

#4 Prepare Your Family

Winter here in Iowa can get really cold with freezing temperatures & icy snowy conditions. If there was ever an emergency due to an accident, the power ever goes off due to a snow storm, or what if something else happens that needs to be talked over; your family should have a talk about what to do in different scenarios. You need a plan! My husband & I have three little boys to watch over so we need to be able to give them instructions on what they should do incase of different emergencies/winter events occurring. Make sure you practice what to do incase your kids would need to call “911” if something happened that required it. And also make sure they know when it would be necessary and when it’s not. Of course they need to know how to call on a phone or get to a neighbors house if they cannot get it to work for some reason. In the event of your car sliding off the road due to ice or snow a talk with kids should be set a side just for what should they do in the event that such a thing should happen, especially if mom or dad were injured. It is important to make sure your family is prepared for anything & everything including sickness.

While I am on the topic of preparing your family I think that making sure that you and your family is prepared for those sicky days that come with the cold and the icky weather. It is important to prepare for everything. When you go out to get food for your house or pantry be sure to take a little extra if possible to stock up on basic necessities for those icky sick days as well. I mean how will you get through winter if everyone gets sick and with nothing to help relieve some of those icky symptoms or make them better?!

A big thing that is needed to prepare for winter for anyone in my area or any place that it is cold is to have nice warm winter coats , hats, gloves, snowsuits, scarves, & boots! Making sure my family and I are prepared for winter with all of the necessities for keeping warm in the snow and cold is another top priority!

#5 Prepare Your Vehicle

Photo by Lisa Fotios on Pexels.com

As I mentioned above about preparing your family for winter and all types of scenarios if such a scenario involving a vehicle occurred how well would you be prepared in your vehicle? Is it stocked up for such an event? Ever since I was little growing up in this state I have been taught over & over to make sure I am prepared in the event that my car goes off into a ditch or even having car trouble on the side of the roadway in the cold. I always make sure to have some very important items in my vehicle just incase such as:

  • Warm Blankets– to help you keep warm. If your car were to ever get stuck in a snow drift you should turn your vehicle off due to gas fumes that can back up into the car causing carbon monoxide poisoning if your not aware of it happening. If your in that situation it would be tempting to leave the vehicle on but what if the tail pipe is blocked. Until you know that it isn’t blocked you should be safe than sorry. Snuggle up with some warm blankets & who ever is in your car.
  • Snacks– just in case your ever in a situation where you are stranded it is a good idea to keep some snacks in the car just in case. I would keep sodas in your car due to them exploding but instead bottled water might be better.
  • Matches/Lighter-just in case because you never know when a fire source away from your vehicle of course may come in handy for warmth or alerting someone for help.
  • Scissors/Sharp Knife– safely kept in a lock box would be the best spot somewhere within reach incase your seatbelt ever becomes a trap and you or someone else becomes stuck in one. Also you never know what other uses you can use it for.
  • Extra Coats/Gloves/Boots/Socks– pack extra clothes for you and any kids you may have in the car with you. Any extra layer will help keep you warm in an event you are in a cold car in an emergency or something.
  • Hand Warmers– fairly cheap hand or food warming packs that heat up when activated will help warm you up in an emergency.
  • First Aid Kit– One big necessity is a first aid kit with a variety of items for medical emergencies that can’t simply be fixed or can’t wait until emergency vehicles to arrive.
  • Cat Litter/Ice Melt– something to give your vehicle some traction in the event you become stuck on an icy patch. You can pour some litter or ice melt by your tires for much needed traction and you might just avoid having to call for help.
  • Ice Scraper– to clear your windshields from ice or snow.
  • Anti-Freeze/Wiper Fluid– it’s pretty hard to clear your windshield to see out of if you don’t have some sort of wiper fluid for your vehicle.
  • Flashlight/Reflective Item– in case you need to flag another vehicle down in the dark. Also Something reflective will keep you visible to other vehicles.

Books

Dino Mike and the T.Rex Attack

I wanted to write about something new and never really being a reader of books until recently due to reading more to my kids who are finally old enough to sit and listen long enough. I thought well I am reading all of these books after all and I might as well share my opinion of these books that I have read to someone.

My middle boy who is 4, is obsessed with dinosaurs he loves them with a passion. He knows quite a lot of the names and what they would have done back when they were alive. He has a pretty big vocabulary when it comes to any kind of dinosaur. Which is why I thought that he would love to hear a book about dinosaurs but not just the boring same old information books but more based around a storyline that includes dinosaurs instead. I like I am sure many people enjoy a story that takes you to another realm of existence. When I read any kind of book I don’t want to be in boring old Iowa anymore well that is unless the book is about Iowa. Then I wonder why would I have been reading it to begin with?
I spent quite a lot of time scouring the internet for a book that had dinosaurs in it and adventure as well. After kind of narrowing it down I had to of course make sure it was something that his age and his older brother who is 6 could wrap their minds around.

Dino Mike and the T.Rex Attack was the book I settled on. It is the first book in a series of 8 by Franco Aureliani who also illustrated it as well. It is always the best idea to start at the beginning of any kind of series: books, movies, tv, ect because that’s usually where you start anything, at the beginning! The book is for a reading grade of second & third grade or for the typical age of 6-8 years old. I don’t feel that kids should feel restricted to books because of their age or reading level because everyone is at a different level altogether because we are all different. My 6 year old is just now learning to read and my 4 year old doesn’t know how to read yet so I was the main one reading although I did have my 6 year old read a page here and there just to help his mind learn some new words. I read this book to my children over the course of a couple weeks reading a chapter or two at a time. I could have easily have read it front to back in less than a day. I read it to them wanting it to last a bit longer but it could have been done a lot soon than two weeks just an FYI. It is a 10 chapter long book with chapters that average from 5-10 pages with the exception of a couple that have closer to 20 but keep in mind that this book has pictures in it as well. I’ll show you the type of pages to read with the picture style/illustration style as well below.

I got a kick out of reading this book because it was engaging for me the reader as well as the audience I was reading to. My boys seemed to enjoy the adventure that they were taken on into a world where dinosaurs actually still existed; it pulls your imagination out of storage making it full of life and adventure once again. As with any good book series it pulls you in and this one does just that making you want to get the next book and so on. For an added experience while reading this book to my littles I came up with the idea of having them tell in words or draw a picture in a little reading journal about the chapter I was reading to them at that time. I wanted to make sure that they were indeed absorbing the words I was reading to them. After & sometimes during the chapters I read to them they did just that drew or wrote about what they pictured was happening in their own minds. This strategy helped them and still does help them learn to listen to what is being said to them or in this case read.

What is the book about?

If I could summarize this book up to what it is about it would look something like this. The actual book it’s self is like I mentioned about a kid and a dinosaur; only this dinosaur is somehow mysteriously brought into todays world where a kid named Mike stumbles into a fun adventure. He must figure out how this happened while meeting some unique characters along the way!

How much did this book cost?

The book itself was a good price not super expensive and I felt that it was a good price for the length of book you get as well as the quality of the book. It doesn’t feel like a cheap book and is well bound together. Everything has held up well when turning pages to read the quality of paper is also pretty good. Sometimes a cheaper book means that less time went into the books that are printed/made so the pages might rip easier or might just fall apart all together. That is not the case here as it does seem to be a pretty well put together book. You can see the price below for both the US & Canada.

My boys & I enjoyed reading this book and we loved the adventure it took us on. I am planning on completing this book series so look for updates on those books in the future. It was a nice read that I feel anyone with kids would enjoy or maybe even a someone who enjoys reading about dinosaurs in general. Thanks for reading my post and for visiting my blog. Adventure, Motherhood

Talk About it Tuesday: Clean Your Dishwasher

In April 2019 my husband & I bought our first house. Finally after spending years in family owned rentals and just living with family in general we have our own home for us and our little ones. We love owning our own place and pretty much everything is the same for us its just now the house, appliances, & land is ours not someone else’s.

I have always been good at fixing things and I enjoy learning how things of all categories work so I have no problem fixing what I can understand even if I don’t have a degree to fix it. Anymore pretty much anything can be found online more specifically on YouTube so the confidence is high and what I or my husband can’t get ourselves we do know how to ask for help.

Pretty much every appliance that we became owners of besides the washer and dryer came with the house. The one exception was the fridge which lasted not even a year then we had to replace it. That just leaves the dishwasher and with everything going on in the world we can’t really afford to replace that if needed to.

When it rains it pours because this past week maybe within the last couple weeks our beloved dishwasher has started to act up. It wasn’t draining correctly and had water standing in the bottom after every wash. Not to mention the dishes weren’t quite getting clean. I may have muttered a specific word under my breath when I discovered this. I was irritated its like anything that could go wrong in this year of 2020 just has because it could!
My husband & I were unfortunately faced with some decisions on what we were going to have to do about it.

  • Hire someone to fix it.
  • Look for a used replacement.
  • Fix it ourselves.

What to do was running across my mind pretty much everyday. I finally decided I needed to at least try to fix it or figure out if I could fix it. We can’t afford to hire someone to come fix it because its either gonna come out to too much money or not even worth it and too much money. The money that goes for that might as well go for a newer one but we don’t have the money for a newer one so that doesn’t make the best of sense in my mind. It’s a circle of going nowhere and a lot of time wasted.

The dishwasher we have is a General Electric Eterna Nautilus; I kind of feel like a badass in a way. Excuse the language but I wrestled that thing all day today and now I feel like we have an understanding on how a dishwasher is supposed to do it’s job. Now you see I am not a snob to washing my dishes by hand I really only need a dishwasher to sanitize certain dishes and currently the big ones are bottles, bottle nipples, & pacifiers. I can wash dishes by hand with the right accessories. I have hand eczema that if or when my hands come in contact with different soaps/moisture they tend to break out and become super itchy. I am not a fan when this happens because it hurts a lot. And after getting over a mango allergic reaction just recently not really looking for more painful skin problems anytime soon.

I took the drain guard out and then the drain grate that sets down a hole underneath it because if it wasn’t draining my mind says it probably has an issue with the drain, right? I cleaned both of them off really good and sifted through the drain for anything that may cause the water to not drain properly. I ran the dishwasher to see if that helped and it seemed to but just incase I also ran some vinegar & baking soda inside it during a regular wash as well. Note: (I double checked with YouTube to make sure I took it apart right & also to put it back together correct). After the baking soda & vinegar I put it back together then decided to really give it a deeper clean by getting out all of the built up gunk in the door at the bottom in the little crevasses that needed cleaned. I even cleaned out that little hole in the door for the rinse aid I figured that since the little plug had come out once or twice … it should be cleaned and vinegar & baking soda would probably be fine. It helped bring up some junk that got in there by using the old volcano cleaning method. I scrubbed with vinegar & baking soda then wiped it down and then sprayed over with some Clorox cleaner to sanitize it extra. I of course wiped it out real good to get that up off of the dishwasher the best I could. And because I was cleaning it I ran a full dishwasher load with nothing in it to clean off sort of residue I may have missed.

After a full days work of wrestling with my dishwasher and taking it apart then cleaning it out I finally was able to run a medium sized dish load. Good news is it didn’t leak which is especially great because it wasn’t leaking before so at least I didn’t break it more. This load seemed to get cleaner than expected but only time can tell for the future.

For the most part I feel I tried as much as I can do on my own and I am happy that I tried to fix it. If the problem continues it would probably be best to find a cheap and I mean cheap replacement versus trying to fix it. Can’t really afford it but if it were cheap enough maybe. I have never owned a dishwasher before just used family members. What I have learned is that I will need to make sure I clean it more regularly to keep all the gunk from building up. I would highly recommend that if you have a dishwasher to clean it regularly. I was cleaning it once in a while but will be more on top of it from here on out. Probably wouldn’t hurt to run some bleach through it once in a while but that is my own speculation not something that I know for sure. Anything that I have done with my dishwasher today and in this post has been trial and error things that I have kind of come up with myself/researched myself. I am always open to any tips for this area of expertise if anyone has any. I am not trained in any sort of working with these types of appliances but I am always wanting to learn about more things. Comment below with any tips about cleaning dishwashers or any fun stories if you have any down below!

Raddish Kids Monthly Kit Review

There’s nothing I loved more than exploring the kitchen as a kid. I loved mixing different combinations of foods together making new recipes up along the way. I ended up becoming the cook in the house for my family growing up they loved all the different things I made up and it was great for my parents because they didn’t have to cook all the time. Now that I have my own kids I want them to have the ability to explore the kitchen the way that I did. I want them to have those life skills that they enjoy rather than feeling pressure to learn it at a later time in their lives. If they can learn it now as kids maybe they will learn to enjoy cooking and possibly find a passion for it.

I have been given a unique opportunity to do an review/unboxing for Raddish Kids. They send out monthly cooking boxes directed towards kids so that they can learn about cooking, food safety, & kitchen safety all in one box. These neat little kits can be done with a parent for younger children or some supervision for older ones who are already pretty comfortable in the kitchen. I love that such a box service like this one exists. As a woman who grew up in a time where these sorts of things didn’t exist I am thankful that they do now for my kids and for other kids & generations to come!

I want to refresh your memories about what or rather who Raddish Kids are and what they do as a company just a little bit better. I wrote up a post on the all about Raddish Kids Box a couple of weeks ago but I am sure like my self when I read something eventually I need a refresher on what I read eventually with time.

Who is Raddish Kids?

Raddish Kids is a monthly cooking club for kids ages 4-14+ that teaches about cooking food, food safety, & kitchen safety. It brings the education of learning about food and how to cook it as well as the fun of making new recipes home. When your kids learn with Raddish Kids they will develop new skills and make fun memories in the process.

How to get started?

Raddish Kids offer a 3 payment plans to help you pick the right one for your family. For a month to month plan prices start at $24 per box. Next there’s the 6 month plan where you pay for 6 months up front and the price per box for that plan is $22 saving you a bit of money compared to the month to month plan. Finally if you would rather pay yearly your price per box would be $20 per box per month up front for the year. On top of those great prices you are able to add up to 3 extras per sibling on to each plan. This is great for families with multiple kids so nobody feels left out! Lastly you can even ad in an apron to your first box for the special patch that is included in each monthly box. This is a great way to remember what your kids learned with each box in a fun way!

What is included in each box?

Inside each box/kit:

  • There are 3 recipe cards that happen to be laminated just in case things get messy. On top of that feature the recipe cards include fun skills to learn in the kitchen as well as the ingredients and the step by step instructions with pictures for the recipes being made.
  • A Kitchen Tool, every box includes its own unique kitchen tool that is necessary for making the recipes in that months box. Each kit helps build up your kitchen tools but at the same time teaches your kid(s) how to use them properly.
  • A Creative Kitchen Project, each kit includes a hands on craft, experiment, or food game for family fun!
  • Monthly Collectibles, that include conversation cards about food or kitchen talk and a fun apron patch to remember what you learned month to month.
  • Grocery Lists for all of the ingredients that will be needed to make all of these amazing recipes of course.

A Fun Bonus

On the Raddish Kids website each month there is a section called “BONUS BITES” which includes:

  • A Bonus Recipe for that months box.
  • A fun music playlist for the theme of that months box.
  • Dietary Modifications for the recipes for the month which includes recipe modifications for families with dietary restrictions.
  • A lesson plan for learning about the theme that each box is based on. It is a fun way to expand the learning part of each monthly box with extra bits of knowledge that they can learn about.
  • You can even try to guess the them of the next month and try to figure out what recipes will be included in it with some fun clues.

Don’t Waste Any Time; Check Out Raddish Kids Today!

Raddish Kids Review

I was given a box from Raddish Kids to give a review over there cooking kit. As with all of my reviews I give my honest opinions that are my own. I want to bring my readers great family products and anything that I give a recommendation for I want to make sure I would use them for my own family first rather than just saying hey go an try it out. Which brings me to this review; so let’s get started.

This box has a lot of different parts to it and I think that it makes it very unique. I will start by unboxing it and then going through each recipe inside. Finally I will show you the recipes in real life as I have made. In the the end I will give a full and honest opinion over this entire box and the recipes that were made. I will base my review on quite a few things including: the packaging, how the contents fit together, & how easy everything is to understand (recipes, games, & projects ect).

Recipe Time: Boo-nana Bread

Out of the three recipes in the box I let my son choose which one he wanted to do. He chose the Boo-nana Bread and so that is what we made below. I opted not to make all three for this unboxing because since this is a past box that can still be purchased I didn’t want to reveal too much. If you are curious about this recipe as well as the others and want to try this box out for yourselves it can be found HERE. Below is the ingredients we needed. Which were: Sugar, Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Salt, Very Ripe Bananas (we had Ripe Enough Bananas), Flour, Butter, & Eggs. This recipe was one that used the special tool that came with this box, if you guess potato masher or masher you guessed correct. My middle son is the one who helped make this recipe he is four and even though he needed some reminders here and there due to him being four he could pretty easily follow the directions given. I think his favorite parts of making it was the mashing of the bananas & the mashing. Then the eating part was after it was made which is pretty much the best part over all! We were going to make muffins but ended up changing our minds because he wanted it as close to the picture as possible. (Note: I was the one who did the oven cooking parts; he knows that ovens are only for adults. He is 4 after all.)

On each card there are the ingredients and kitchen utensils/items needed for each recipe; the directions in picture form for making each recipe; and some fun tips/tricks in both reading comprehension & science about the kitchen or recipe card being used. Those were more for older kids and will be great for my 6 year old to learn about when he gets back from his weekend at the grandparents house!

One last picture I wanted to add in was our clean up time where he is cleaning the recipe card off with a Clorox wipe (he wore safety gloves); the cards are laminated and water proof which means when they get messy they can be easily cleaned up for future uses. Having younger kids usually means there are going to be messes especially in the kitchen!

What He thought:

“Nanna Bread”, “Made recipe with smasher, Yep. Now can have nanna bread?”

As quoted by a 4 year old.

What I Thought?

The first impression of this box upon opening it is that it is very well put together and that a lot of thought went into the box it’s self and all of the packaging as well. The packaging is a very nice quality and I love that they use a variety of colors to make the activities & recipes pop out rather than just using words.

Which brings me to the recipe cards; on each individual recipe card they have the ingredients all printed out on the card in picture form and the instructions are in picture form as well. On top of that all of the cards front, back, & everywhere in between is laminated, meaning that you can get banana bread batter on them for instance and they will wipe clean and they will be able to be reused no problem for future use!

There is just so much information packed into this little box kit not including the “Bonus Bites” section online where you can find a bunch of extra’s for the current and past monthly boxes. There are even dietary substitutions for each box.

I was curious if I could find the dietary substitutions for the Boo-nana Bread recipe so I went to their site Raddish Kids, then I found the Bonus Bites section at the top and clicked on it, next I found a search bar on the Bonus Bite’s page and typed in Boo-nana Bread as sure enough the Dietary Substitution/Restrictions popped up.

Even though we didn’t need to use the substitutions for this recipe the fact that we could if we needed to is great. I love that I can go back in the future and find the substitutions for it is great too because as a person who does have some allergies to certain foods I know that they can just pop up for really anyone or kids who are still growing.

Like I mentioned above I made this Boo-nana Bread Recipe with the help of a 4 year old; who still needed some reminders while making it but it was simple enough for him to be able to follow directions in making it. He naturally gets distracted so there’s that. I think that him being able to see the directions in the picture format was a huge helper for him. He cannot read yet so being able to see what the recipe needed and when the ingredient was supposed to go into the bowl was a very nice feature that I think a lot of recipes could use because it makes teaching kids to cook a lot easier this way. I thought that it was very cool of them to print it all in color as well so that kids like my 4 year old can tell what was needed by the color of the item in the picture not just what the picture looks like in general.

All in all I felt like everything was pretty easy to understand most of it was even easy for my 4 year old with help of course for him to grasp onto and understand especially with the help of the pictures included on the recipe cards. I feel that if he can understand by use of the pictures with some help that my older 6 almost 7 year old would be able to understand not only the recipe cards but the games that came with this box as well. However since he was not home for that part we skipped it for now but will do that part with him when he returns home from the grandparents house. The little game in this box was a word game where you create a little story using fun words that is inserted into the sentence as it is read. There was also a fun little crossword but that is something that kind of flies above both of my kids heads but could be something for an older kid or adult to do.

The box has a bunch of different fun recipes & fun exercises/things to learn. It has a lot of neat and fun things to do in general. I love that the box can be done with as much help or as little help that is needed depending on the age range of child/children working on the box. As well as fun things to do inside the box/kit I love that each month brings extras todo along side all of the other things. You simply go to the Raddish Kids website to their Bonus Bites page and look up what ever box you are on in the search bar. The bonus content for that box will pop up and then you have a whole other fun list of recipes, songs, & activities to do alongside or after you get through all of what was included inside the main box.

In my conclusion I honestly love this box and think that the price is spot on. When you break down all of what is included inside the actual box and then factor in what you get in extras this is well worth it. I will be back as a future customer for sure. I loved being able to do these fun recipes with my kiddos and would love to continue to make some fun recipes from this company with them again. Definitely excited to grow our recipe collection a bit more as well!
